At a glance:

  • Dose Reminders and Logging

  • Medication Interaction Checker

  • Share Medications with family members

With iOS 16, Apple will introduce "Medications" an app to add your prescription medications, vitamins, and over-the-counter medications privately on your device. Medication data will also be available in the Health App too.

iOS 16 users will be able to have their iOS device remind them when to take medications and the ability to log medications with as-needed dosing, think allergy and pain medications.

Users will also be able to share their medication

In the announcement, Apple mentions how "drug-drug interactions cause a quarter of a million hospitalizations each year" in the United States. Apple has partnered with Elsevier to provide "critical, serious, and moderate" interactions information to users when they add medications. In the presentation it appears this is not limited to drug-drug but also drug-alcohol interactions. We will need to wait for the iOS 16 beta to see what other interaction types are being monitored.

The addition of Medications to iOS 16 is definitely in-line with Apple's push into personal healthcare and health technology. This year at WWDC other notable health features include sleep health monitoring, and improved atrial fibrillation tracking.
